Howard Newman

Pine Brook Chairman and CEO – US Member

Mr. Newman is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Pine Brook Road Partners, LLC, which he co-founded in 2006. Pine Brook is an investment firm that currently has more than $4 billion of assets under management across two funds and co-investment vehicles that makes “business building” and other growth equity investments, primarily in energy and financial services businesses.

In addition to overseeing Pine Brook’s portfolio, Mr. Newman serves as a Trustee of The Salk Institute for Biological Studies. Mr. Newman has served as a director or designated observer of more than 45 companies, including 18 public companies. Of these companies, 16 conducted business internationally in the energy, telephony, and reinsurance industries.

During the term of Governor George Pataki of New York, Mr. Newman served as an advisor to him on energy policy and as a Senior Advisor to the Long Island Power Authority. He is also past Chairman of the Yale University Council Committee on New Haven Economic Development and the Yale Alumni Fund.

Prior to forming Pine Brook, Mr. Newman spent 22 years with Warburg Pincus, LLC; he served as Warburg’s Vice Chairman, developed their energy and financial services businesses and led a number of other investing practices as well. Mr. Newman also spent 10 years with Morgan Stanley & Co., Incorporated before joining Warburg Pincus.

Mr. Newman holds a B.A. in Economics (magna cum laude with Distinction) and an M.A. in Economics from Yale University. He was also a Marshall Scholar at Cambridge University and holds a Ph.D. in Business Economics from Harvard University.
